The Elizabeth Pearson Post Clock

The Elizabeth Pearson Post Clock was erected on April 28th 2009. It was in honor of Elizabeth Pearson, a library benefactor. Elizabeth Pearson left a financial gift to the Wabash Carneige Public Library through her estate after she passed away in 1991. In the Fall of 2008, the Library Board of Trustees decided to use interest from the money provide through Elizabeth Pearson’s Estate to purchase the clock in her honor. The interest used to purchase the Post Clock was NOT tax money but money accumulated from her gift.

Below are articles on the Elizabeth Pearson Post Clock. The first one is a from the Director’s Blog on the Library’s website and the second one is from The Paper article on May 13, 2009.

Post Clock in Honor of Elizabeth Pearson
If you have driven by the Library since Tuesday, April 28th, you might have noticed something new at the Library. A Post Clock in honor of Elizabeth Pearson has been added to the building. The funds for the Post Clock and from the Elizabeth Pearson Gift Fund are NON-TAX money. Elizabeth Pearson was a native of Wabash and graduated from Wabash High School. After High School, she moved to New York and established a career there that involved travel to many places, including Africa. Later in her live, she returned to live in Wabash. She was a frequent user of the Wabash Carnegie Public Library. The Library's services were something she treasured. After living in Wabash for many decades, she retired to Kansas City before passing away in 1991. A Elizabeth Pearson Gift Fund was established for the Library by The Elizabeth Pearson Trust through her Estate in the 1990s. With interest from this fund the Library has been able to do special projects and programs such as celebrating its 100th anniversary, bringing an author to Wabash for the 2008 Community Read, and beautification projects for the Library property.
We thank Ms. Pearson for her gift and lasting assistance in providing services to the community of Wabash!

Very few of the details of Elizabeth Pearson’s life are known. The city native graduated from Wabash High School before moving to New York where she worked in the clothing industry for many years. She traveled frequently and eventually returned to Wabash, where she visited the Wabash Carnegie Public Library, 188 W. Hill St., on a daily basis. After living in Wabash again for several decades, Pearson retired to Kansas City to be near her family before her death in 1991. In the 1990s, The Elizabeth Pearson Trust, through her estate, established The Elizabeth Pearson Gift Fund for the library. With the interest from this fund, the Wabash Carnegie Public Library has been able to do special projects, including the celebration of its 100th year anniversary, beautification of the building and grounds, and other special events. “About a year ago, the Board decided to do something special to honor Ms. Pearson and her gift and lasting assistance in providing services to the Wabash community,” said Library Director Ware Wimberly. Again using the interest from the funds left by Pearson, the library has spent the past several months researching and then purchasing a Post Clock built by the Vernon Clock Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. The clock was erected on April 28 with help from Quality Electric, Wabash.
